Genealogy and DNA Research

A section of the Museum of the American Indian Tribes of the Ozark’s Plateau is designed for researching genealogy and general information about Cherokees and American Indian culture and history.  There are books provided for research and general knowledge, with more being added all the time.

An exciting new topic is DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid), and how it can be used in genealogical research.  The U.S. National Library of Medicine website at https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/primer/basics/dna has some basic information about DNA.  There are books about DNA and how it links people together, and tests being offered by various companies.  Usually the tests being offered do not include much definition regarding Native American DNA, but there is at least one company, DNA Consultants, that is working on a database regarding Native American DNA.  Their website  https://dnaconsultants.com/  provides information and the opportunity to purchase DNA tests which WCNAM members can purchase at a discount using a promo code provided when requested by email.
